"I'm opening a bookshop and I could do with a little help." That’s how it started. It’s amazing what can grow from a small ask.
Georgina was looking to take her book-selling market stall to the next level and came to us to help bring it to the high street in Hornsea. The name Clutterbooks comes from her grandparents' surname, Clutterbuck, so that family bookshop feeling needed to come through strongly. With Georgina just starting out, we also had to find budget-conscious solutions for the shop frontage signage while building a brand with real presence.
(Approach)
Working with Georgina, we began by sitting down to understand her inspirations and aspirations for the business. Clutterbooks had already come a long way in a short time, so we avoided overcomplicating the logo and guided her toward something simple and effective, a solution that would be straightforward and cost-efficient to roll out across multiple applications.
We presented several brand directions and refined them down to the final solution by demonstrating how the identity would work across signage, print and promotional materials.
(Outcome)
The Clutterbooks brand is a clean, simple execution that draws on classic bookshop cues such as author quotes, considered typography and cohesive signage to create a consistent identity. Bright gold vinyl echoes the tradition of hand-painted gold leaf shop windows, adding a touch of class, while modern typography keeps the shop firmly rooted in the present. Cost-effective laser-cut coloured composite aluminium panels bring the signage together in a polished and budget-friendly way.
The local community has embraced Georgina and Clutterbooks, with warm feedback about the store and its presence on the high street. At Umber Creative, we’re proud to have played our part in helping Georgina set the standard for her new venture.
