Umber gets hands-on at Thin Ice Press in York

Last week, we took a day out of the office and headed away from our screens and to get hands on with Thin Ice Press in York for a creative experience.

Together, we designed and printed our own 15th anniversary poster using traditional letterpress techniques. We took inspiration from our 10th anniversary poster, building on that idea while embracing the heritage and craft of print.

Letterpress printing was recently added to the Heritage Crafts Red List, highlighting it as an endangered craft. Thin Ice Press is one of only a handful of workshops helping to keep this centuries-old practice alive. Today, letterpress survives thanks to a dedicated community of printers, workshops, artisans, and hobbyists who continue to invest their time, skill, and passion into the craft.

Working with wood and metal type, we set the letters by hand, inked the blocks and pressed each sheet ourselves. It was a refreshing change from our usual digital work and gave us the chance to connect with the roots of design and print.

Our finished poster now hangs proudly in the studio. It is a reminder of how far we have come and a celebration of our passion for creativity as we look ahead to the next chapter.
