Get to know our team: Tillie, web developer

We have a great team here at Umber Creative, who work really hard to do a stellar job for our clients. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them! So, we want you to get to know them a little better, find out what makes them tick, what they love about their job and finally settle the age old debate on how to make a good old brew.

We’re kicking off our team interviews with Tillie Pearson, our Web Developer. Tillie is originally from Barton and joined us in 2015 as an apprentice. Since then, she’s worked her socks (and trusty Dr Martens) off to complete her training and become a core and trusted member of the Umber family.

She also won the Humber’s Top 30 Under 30 Award last year, which is a testament to her hard work and dedication! Now let’s get to know her a little better...

What attracted you to the apprenticeship at Umber Creative?

"After realising College and A-Levels weren’t the right route for me, I decided to look for an alternative. I’d always had a personal interest in coding, so when I saw Umber Creative recruiting for an apprentice web developer, I thought the role would suit me down to the ground.

The agency works with some great clients and takes a really creative approach to their projects, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn in an environment I’d love to work in."

Tell us a bit about your apprenticeship

"I studied at Hull College for a qualification in graphic design, digital media and textiles. I got to work on some interesting projects there, but I enjoyed my time learning in the office most.

My course wasn’t really tailored to web development, so it was great to see the guys here at Umber Creative in action. From day one, I was set to work on real projects, which can be a bit daunting when you first start, but it’s definitely the best way to learn!"

What did you learn from completing it?

"Aside from honing my web development skills, patience! It takes time to learn how to do things properly, especially in a working environment when you have to combine learning with completing client work."

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

"Overcoming my self-doubt. After leaving college without my A-Levels, I felt like I was at a bit of a loss. But finding a career I enjoy, and working with managers who constantly support me and tell me how well I’m doing, has definitely helped to boost my confidence.

I also overcame my irrational fear of answering the office telephone!"

What do you enjoy most about your job?

"The team, and the kind of work I get to do. Everyone here is so lovely and supportive, and I find coding really enjoyable. I love how you can immerse yourself in a big project."

What are your hopes for the future?

"I’m starting to work on bigger projects, so I definitely want to do more of that!"

You’re making a cuppa. What goes in first... the milk or tea bag?

"Tea bag. Who puts milk in first?!"

What’s your pet peeve?

"When people put the milk in first."

You have £1 million pounds. How do you spend it?

"I’d be sensible. Some would go in a trust for my niece and nephew. I’d invest some so I don’t run out, and I’d buy a nice house too."

Ebay or Amazon?

"Ebay. I love a good bargain and you can get some amazing clothes on there!"
